In May 2005 a group gathered at First Federal Bank to discuss the possibility of building a Hospice House. By the end of the meeting over $125,000 in services, money, and materials had been pledged. Ground was broken in October of that year. Over the next two years 25 businesses and over 200 individuals gave of themselves and finished what had become a $450,000 project. The House stands at 501 E. Sherman in Harrison, AR. It is a testament to what a community can come together to achieve. There is no other Hospice House like it in the United States. It was built by the community for the community.
The House is 2,500 square feet and has 4 bedrooms with private baths equipped with medical beds and equipment in a home like setting. It also includes a common kitchen/dining area, meditation/prayer room, laundry room, and children's play area equipped with books, videos, toys and more.
Patients are brought to the Hospice House for many reasons, including pain and symptom management, and to provide caregivers at home a much needed break. Family members are given full support throughout this difficult time, whether that is to provide travel expenses, a warm meal, or a shoulder to lean on. The House allows you to become the spouse, child, or friend again, and not the caregiver.
